About Third Judicial Circuit of Michigan:

The Third Judicial Circuit is the largest circuit court in Michigan, with 59 judges and three operating divisions. The Third Circuit Court has jurisdiction over Civil, Criminal, and Family matters arising in the County of Wayne. The National Center for State Courts has cited the Third Circuit Court as one of the model urban courts in the United States for case flow management and the timely disposition of the Court's docket. Overall administrative responsibility for the operations of the Third Judicial Circuit of Michigan rests with the Chief Judge and the Executive Court Administrator, under the direction of the State Court Administrator's Office and the Michigan Supreme Court.

The Court has the following Divisions:

Civil - Matters handled involve claims of more than $25,000, which include medical malpractice, auto negligence, personal injury, contracts, employment discrimination, and receiverships are heard in the Civil Division.

Criminal - All felony cases that are bound over from the district courts in Wayne County, as well as district court criminal appeals, are heard in the Criminal Division.

Family Domestic/Friend of the Court - Cases handled include divorce, paternity, personal protection, emancipation of minors, name changes, parental waivers, and infectious disease matters. Each of these case types may include matters concerning custody, support, parenting time, property, and other issues.

Family Juvenile - Cases handled in this Division include juvenile delinquency, child abuse and neglect, adoption, and guardianship. Referees conduct hearings on the informal dockets, which include traffic and ordinance violations, and consent matters.
