MERS of Michigan

Company Overview

The Municipal Employees' Retirement System (MERS) of Michigan is a public nonprofit organization serving municipalities and their employees all across the state. We were created by the Michigan Legislature in 1945 with one, simple goal: helping municipalities offer affordable, sustainable retirement solutions for their employees.

Company History

MERS was created by the Michigan Legislature in 1945, and by 1996, we were granted independence from the state. Today, MERS proudly counts nearly 800 municipal systems, with close to 100,000 active and retired members. Approximately 92 percent of MERS 28,000+ retiree members remain in Michigan, contributing more than $400 million to Michigan’s economy.
The MERS Retirement Board provides strict oversight and fiduciary responsibility over the entire system. Over the years, many individual components have guided the Legislature and the Board, resulting in a profound influence over our growth and evolution, as well as future initiatives.
